It was summer, and I was biking.
Every day, I took the same route. Repeating the same distance.
Choosing the same streets.
I always had the same starting point, and my goal of arrival was always the same.
As I headed down this street I saw a man in the distance. He was walking in the same direction as I. He was a middle-aged man. Impeccably dressed. Maybe a bit old-fashioned. He walked steady, but determined. As if his goal was defined and clear. I came nearer.
He was carrying a suitcase. From the side of it, a piece of clothing was hanging out. As if he had been in a rush, closing his suitcase too quickly. As I passed him, I did not turn my head to see who he was, and I only saw him from the corner of my eye until he had disappeared from my sight.
The following day, I saw him again. On the same street. Again he was nicely dressed. Only a slight change. His trousers were different, or was it his scarf? I do not remember, but something was different. Again he was carrying his suitcase.
As I was closing in on him, I noticed that also today a piece of clothing was hanging out from his suitcase, but now a different piece of clothing from yesterday. Again, I just passed him on my bike, not turning my head.
The next day, everything repeated itself again: I came down the same street and I saw him. Only minor changes in his clothing, but still impeccable. Still carrying his suitcase. Again, different pieces of clothing hanging out from it. Still, he was walking determined and steady. And again I was passing him, not turning my head.
The following days, I do not remember clearly how many, 10 days, maybe 20, the scene was repeated everyday.

Ingrid Skovgaard
Udforskning i forløsning”

Walking the Purgatory
The overall theme of the project is the walk; the process of walking a passage, doing the journey, moving through stages and leaving behind distances of a path; as the physical act, as well as the metaphorical significance.
In a search for finding answers and trying to understand the inner passages of my life: what interests me is the power of walking in landscapes, being it natural or cultural, physical or inner landscapes, to nurture the recovery of hope and relief.
I have great interest in the signification of rituals and how it can function as a metaphorical tool for reaching a more profound personal understanding, as well as a subjective justification for ones instinctively actions, thoughts and emotions; both in a subjective and personal way, as well as with the definition and influence of an authority and socially acted out.
I am investigating the creation of walks as rituals, and in this case as a symbol of the processes in life that consist of great challenge; sometimes of great pain and sorrow, but which one goes through with endurance, and are moved forward by the propulsion of the passage with hope and light at aim.
Description of the work. A video and sound installation
Two distinct walking rituals have been documented on video.
Each video will be projected on each end wall of a large room. One will not be able to see both videos at the same time. The head will have to move from one side to another to follow both videos. The videos of 16 min each will be running in loop. A lyrical soundscape fills the room and relates to both videos.
Video 1: Walking the Purgatory / Caminando por el purgatorio - Part 1 - A protestant journey:
Documentation of a performance I made in the mountains of Jotunheimen in Norway, walking through the canyon of Svartdalen (The Black Valley, also called The Dark Valley (Mørkedalen)).
A staged walk, as a metaphorical ritual: A personal “purgatorial” walk for 9 hours wearing a red ballroom dress, high heel shoes and two Viking brooches.
My staged ritual setting of both the place and the obstacles presented in the dress, the brooches and the high heel shoes, has been chosen to symbolize the issues I am dealing with in the journeys my life consist of, such as e.g. struggles of womanhood, national identity and religious heritage.
Video 2: Walking the Purgatory / Caminando por el purgatorio - Part 2 - A catholic journey.
Documentation of the processions during Semana Santa in Sevilla, with focus on the walk by the participants through the streets during the Easter days.
A collective and social ritual, staged by the brotherhoods and the church, where the participants as well as the spectators are part of a communal walk symbolizing the purpose of mankind’s suffering through life, and function as a emancipation for their own personal passages.

A site specific sculpture- and video installation for Øreby Castle during the art festival Lys over Lolland.
Created in collaboration with the artist Jesper Gram.
Concisting of a 6 meter tall renaissance inspired tower of wood and a video of two renaissance people repeatedly jumping playfull up into the air to the soundtrack of the old folksong “Kragevisen”. ´The video was shown inside the tower which the audience could watch through a peek hole in the tower. The sound from the video could be heard from the outside.
For watching photos of the tower, you can find it under “Other Art works”.

Koncept
